Transparency is important now that so much content is created by Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) like ChatGPT.

This AI policy provides that transparency, so you can trust the words and images I publish.

1. I write my own web pages, blog posts and emails,
   and I do not research using generative AI, or use it for drafting text.
2. I sometimes use AI to help with short text,
   like headlines, social media, and website search terms (SEO).
3. I do not use AI to generate new images or videos,
   or to make substantial changes to existing images and videos.
4. I do not use AI for chat or customer service,
    you are always speaking to a human, usually me.
5. If I ever break these rules, I say so.

Exceptions

• The only times I have broken these rules are:
  1. The image on this page
  2. Research for my post on photographing the Northern Lights.

Third party content

• I am not responsible for what other people write about the Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage, or for the images they publish, including editorials, some content on listing sites, and social media posts about us.
• I am not responsible for the content of third-party material that I re-post.

Reasons for this policy

1 – AI Lies

• AI has no bullshit detectors, and it just strings words together. This is particularly dangerous with medicine, therapy, and veterinary care. It can’t even count! So any “fact” generated by AI should be checked.

2 – AI Steals

• All AI is glorified predictive text (or the equivalent for images, videos and music). It steals things created by humans, and regurgitates it.

3 – AI speeds up the destruction of the planet

• AI is the opposite of green. Generative AI requires much more powerful servers and much more computer power than traditional search or good old brain-power, which is another reason for not using it.

4 – AI puts up barriers and fosters mistrust

• If something is slightly “off” in a piece of text, we no longer think “translation error” or “cultural difference”, we think “AI”, “scam”, and “bot”.
